MDC Tsvangirai has split and Dr Thokozani Khupe, who is the leader of opposition in the National Assembly, is now leading the other formation.

This was announced by Dr Thokozani Khuphe this Friday at McDonald Hall in Makokoba, where she held a press conference.

Dr Khupe said Mwonzora has fired himself as the leader of MDC-T by running in the upcoming by elections as MDC-A.

“I announce that the movement for democratic change Tsvangirai has split and there are now two MDC formation one led by yours truly, Dr Thokozani Khupe who is also the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly and the other. We are announcing this with a heavy heart because this is not what we wanted but circumstances beyond our control have forced us to do,” Dr Khupe said.

“This marriage is irreconcilable as we have a group that is determined to violate and mutilate the party constitution every step of the way and a group that is always guided by the dictates of the constitution and has a leadership that always upholds the constitution.”

Dr Khupe further highlighted that in line with the party’s constitution, Mwonzora fired himself from the MDC-T by notifying the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission that the party will contest the upcoming by-elections under the MDC Alliance banner.

“In doing so, Mwonzora has fired himself because in terms of the
constitution article 5(a) membership of the party shall be terminated if a member joins or supports a political party MDC-T.”

This is the fifth time that the MDC has split, confirming political analysts’ assertion that the opposition has no ideological grounding and sense of direction.
