In an interview with China Media Group, Africa’s most decorated Olympian expressed gratitude to China for hosting the Winter Games under difficult circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“To continue pushing and striving to deliver a safe Games for the world has been the Chinese government’s and organizing committee’s top priority. And I’d like to thank them on behalf of so many athletes that are going to get to come and live their Olympic dreams. Best of luck to Beijing 2022, I know it’s going to be a great success,” said Coventry.
The cabinet minister who is also an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member said the Beijing Winter Olympics will provide global athletes with opportunities not only to showcase their talent, but to inspire and unite the world.
“I was there in 2008 in Beijing. And so I know the commitment that China has to hosting outstanding Games. I think the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games will be just as incredible, probably even more incredible. I’m very excited about getting back to Beijing and getting to witness,” she said.
Minister Coventry will be traveling to Beijing at the end of this month as an IOC member, and is looking forward to presenting medals to other winners in the city.
