THE United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe have strengthened trade relations which have seen an increase in bilateral trade volumes between the two countries in a show of growing confidence.
Addressing UAE leaders and delegates celebrating the National Day of the Republic of Zimbabwe held at the Expo 2020 Dubai this Monday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa confirmed his government’s commitment to deepening international trade ties.
“Allow me to commend the leadership of the UAE for successfully hosting the 169th Edition of the World Exposition, Expo 2020 Dubai,” said President Mnangagwa.
“The increase in bilateral trade volumes between our two countries is a show of the growing confidence your country has in Zimbabwe’s economy and socio-economic development thrust. Be assured that my administration stands ready to deepen and cement our trade ties, taking advantage of the diplomatic missions recently established in two capitals. This development will undoubtedly ensure a more efficient channel for consultations on matters of common interests.”
The two countries have ratified the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement which reinforces Zimbabwe’s respect for property rights as well as security and tenure of investment.
While officiating at the occasion, President Mnangagwa took the time to market the investment opportunities in the country and reiterate that Zimbabwe is open for business.
“The Zimbabwe Pavilion which is exhibiting under the theme, ‘Zimbabwe, the Land of Great Opportunities’, has been showing investment opportunities my country has to offer. I, thus, invite investors across the entire world to “Visit, Trade and Invest in Zimbabwe Zimbabwe is open for business”,” he said.
“Expo 2020 Dubai has provided the Government of Zimbabwe with a platform to forge and foster strategic partnerships as well as bilateral and multilateral dialogue while sharing new innovations and trends towards attracting Foreign Direct Investment in key sectors of our economies for mutual benefits.
“Zimbabwe is a land with vast untapped natural endowments offering an abundance of investment opportunities across all sectors of the economy, these include agriculture, mining, energy, tourism and infrastructure development, among others. Since the advent of the Second Republic, my Government is on an irreversible course anchored on production, productivity and profitability across all sectors. The mantra ‘Zimbabwe is Open for Business’, has inspired tremendous improvements in the Ease of Doing Business environment in line with our determination to guarantee the safety of capital, in our country.”
The President also took time to appreciate the humanitarian aid that has been rendered to Zimbabwe by the UAE.
“Zimbabwe will never forget your kind generosity and the assistance the UAE rendered to us in our moment of great loss and distress, following the climate change-induced Tropical Cyclone Idai in 2019,” President Mnangagwa said.
“That critical and timely humanitarian aid helped us to mitigate the impact of that calamity as well as in revamping our health delivery system. Most recently, your beautiful country also availed essential medical supplies to bolster our national fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. This show of unity, solidarity and love in the face of challenge is cherished and attests to the excellent bilateral relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Zimbabwe which is growing from strength to strength.”
The UAE has been commended for bringing together 192 countries for the ongoing Expo against the backdrop of a global health pandemic in what has been referred to as a reflection of collective hope and determination to build a prosperous future for all, through a world acting in unison, in the true spirit of multilateralism.
