Binga district benefits from road rehabilitation programme

Story by Tichaona Kurewa

DEVOLUTION funds have transformed Binga district of Matabeleland North Province, with a number of roads having been rehabilitated and opened to traffic.

The National Development Strategy One highlights a good road network as a key enabler of economic growth, hence the Second Republic has taken the road rehabilitation programme to all corners of the country including Binga where feeder roads such as Manyanda-Malaliya and Mabobolo are being attended to.

The ZBC News crew drove through the Manyanda-Malaliya road at the weekend, and it was no surprise that the local community is excited by the latest development which is expected to enhance trade and commerce in the area.

“This new road has helped us a lot as villagers of Malaliya because cars are now entering our village and we now have transport to go to the main road,” said one of the delighted residents.

“As shop owners we are grateful, this road has helped us as we are now able to go and buy our stock and transport them back to our shops so easily,” stated another resident.

Another weighed in, “We used to have one small car pirating in our village but since the road was done some other big vehicles like commuter buses are now entering our village.”

“We now call upon large bus operators to consider our road since it is now trafficable,” added another local.

Binga Rural District Council gave an insight into the scope of the road rehabilitation projects being implemented using devolution funds.

“We have done Manyanda-Malaliya road; maintenance and grading. We also did Mabobolo Road grading and gravelling. We also did cleaning of culverts or drainage cleaning around Binga centre and repair of washed away structures around the same area,” noted Binga Rural District Council Engineer, Zibusiso Nyoni.

The road rehabilitation projects are in line with the government’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind in the development matrix of the country.
