Two years imprisonment for illegal mining

FOUR more illegal miners who were arrested in Penhalonga and Odzi during the ongoing Zimbabwe Republic Police operation to restore sanity in the mining sector have been sentenced to a mandatory two-year jail term.
Liberty Chirindo aged 20, Israel Saidi (30), Laison Watson (28) and Learmore Gwazhi (22) have been jailed for two years after pleading guilty to prospecting for minerals without a permit or license.
They appeared in court this Wednesday facing charges of prospecting for gold without a permit.
The quartet was arrested on the 23rd of this month by police officers who were on the lookout for illegal miners along Mutare River in Penhalonga.
The four were found in possession of mining equipment including shovels and gold trapping nets.
The Zimbabwe Republic police’s Operation “Chikorokoza Ngachipere has so far netted thousands of illegal miners, with most of them having been prosecuted and given the mandatory two-year jail term for prospecting for minerals without a permit.
Since the commencement of Chikorokoza Ngachipere on 14 January 2020 a total of 3 137 arrests have been made in Mashonaland Central, Manicaland and Mashonaland East Province.
