Two farmers have been fined by the Environmental Management Agency after a veld fire incident caused a fatal road accident in Bindura.
An investigation conducted by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) in the aftermath of the road accident which claimed two lives on Saturday revealed negligence on the part of farmers.
The fire has been blamed for causing poor visibility on the road which led to the accident.
EMA Mashonaland Central Spokesperson Maxwell Mupotsa said: “We came here to conduct further investigations. The farmers were fined we urge farmers to construct proper fire guards right around their farms.”
Meanwhile, the agency conducted a fire awareness campaign along the Bindura-Harare highway amid consensus that veld fires have become a menace on the environment and the country’s major highways.
The Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality is also working on amendments to Statutory Instrument 7 of 2007 to come up with more punitive measures.
