A FISHING expedition ended in tragedy when two people drowned at Thuli Manyange dam in Gwanda over the weekend.
ZRP Matabeleland South Police Spokesperson, Inspector Philisani Ndebele said four people were fishing at the dam at around 3 pm on Saturday when Melody Mpofu aged 24 slipped and fell into the water body. In an attempt to save Mpofu, Michael Pawurini (49) dived into the water and also ended up drowning.
The two bodies were retrieved by the sub-aqua unit from Bulawayo on Monday.
Inspector Ndebele has urged the public to exercise caution when fishing and desist from attempting to cross flooded water bodies, as the province continues to record an increase in drowning cases.
Meanwhile, police are appealing to relatives of Melody Mpofu who is believed to be from Kezi to get in touch with the police or call 0777 615 766 or 0773594899.
