ZIMBABWE is sending a team of two athletes to the World Junior Championships set for Kenya from the 17th to the 22nd of this month.
The two athletes who qualified to represent the country in Kenya are Clinton Muwunga, who is based in Gwanda and he will compete in the 100m and 200m events for the boys, while Harare based Samkeliso Ndebele will do battle in the girls 200m event.
The two athletes have been training alone since sports were suspended in the country, owing to the surge in COVID-19 cases.
This past Friday, Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) allowed the two athletes to start training, however without any coordinated training and competitions behind them, the National Athletics Association is not hoping for much.
“These athletes have been showing good performances of late but might have been affected by lack of competition which we intended to have and also send the out to regional competitions do with that in mind we have had to revise our targets we just want them to go and achieve personal best times and if they can do beyond that then it will be a bonus,” said Brian Nhubu, National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe Youth Director.
The athletes have just a week to work with their coaches before they depart for the World Junior Championships.
