Zimbabwe makes strides in child protection rights

Story by Oleen Ndori

ZIMBABWE has been given credit for significant strides in the protection of children’s rights through various policies which include amendment of the Marriages Act.

This emerged when the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) representative to Zimbabwe, Dr Tajudeen Oyewale paid a courtesy call on Vice President General Retired Dr Constantino Chiwenga at his Munhumutapa Offices in Harare this Friday.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Dr Oyewale said UNICEF has been impressed by government efforts in protecting children’s rights, particularly amendment of the Marriage Act.

“You will recall that in the last parliament, we spent time looking into the amendment in to the Marriages Act. We are proud to have been part of the team that made the advocacy and now that legislation prohibits the marriage of one under the age of 18 and we are proud of that, that is a real concrete policy,” he said.

Preparations for this year’s World Children’s Day were also topical.

“We looked into the work we have been doing for the past three years, including the protection of children’s rights. And as you are aware, the 20th of November marks the day and Presidents of Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia coming together to push for this worthy cause and this meeting was briefing with the Hon Vice President with regards to preparations of this day,” he added.

The 20th of November has been set aside as the World Children’s Day to promote the rights and well-being of children.

Within the SADC region, Namibia will host the celebrations to be graced by Presidents of Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, while local celebrations are set for Beitbridge on the 23rd of this month under the theme; ‘For Every Child, Every Right.’
