TONGOGARA Refugees Camp Administrator, Johanne Mhlanga has dismissed rumours circulating that government has ceased supplying food rations to refugees saying the false information is meant to tarnish the image of the government. Mhlanga told the ZBC News that government has remained consistent towards food supply and the general welfare of refugees at the camp.
“The Government did everything within its capacity to provide 120 metric tonnes of rice after WFP failed to provide cash entitlements for the refugees”, he said.
He however said development partners have been assisting with food and money. The World Food Programme (WFP) has been disbursing US$13 or ZWL equivalent per person as monthly allocation.
“WFP indicated that they’re failing to get cash from the bank but expressed its commitment to unlocking the logjam”, said Mhlanga.
Tongogara Refugee Camp is one of the largest holding camps in Southern Africa being home to 13 989 refugees and asylum seekers.
