Tobacco marketing season commences

By ZBC Reporter

THE Tobacco selling season opened this Wednesday with the golden leaf fetching four United States dollars and thirty cents per kilogramme, amid optimism of improved prices during the course of the marketing season.

The auction floors, which opened under strict regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, provided an opportunity for growers to start getting value for their hard work.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement Minister, Dr Anxious Masuka who announced the opening prices at the Tobacco Sales Floor in Harare, highlighted the importance of tobacco farmers to the country’s economy.

We note with concern the need to accelerate the overall growth of the sector as we seek to boost value and unlock viability, he said.

Tobacco auction floors have been decentralised across the country in line with the government’s policy of devolution, the National Development Strategy One and Vision 2030.

Tobacco is a key contributor to the country’s foreign currency earnings and the opening of the marketing season is a major boost towards the country’s economic stability consolidation efforts.
