TOBACCO prices continue to firm with merchants expressing satisfaction over high quality tobacco produced by farmers this season.
The tobacco marketing season entered day 17 day this Monday, with sales raking in over 127 million United States dollars as compared to about 49 million United States dollars at the same time last season.
Merchants are happy with the quality of the golden leaf and increased deliveries.
“We have witnessed a 74 percent increase in deliveries and we are very happy with the high quality to leaf produced by farmers. Those with good crop are earning over 5US$ per Kg which is good price as compared to last year,” said one merchant.
“The market is stable this time and as witnessed this Monday farmers are getting between 3us$ and 5 US dollars and 50 cents and the good thing is payments are done in one day,” said another.
Farmers expressed satisfaction over prices prevailing at the floors.
“We are happy about the prices for this year, I have managed to settle my loan and now enjoying the proceeds from tobacco,” said a farmer.
Owing to the huge deliveries, the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) predicts a smooth and shorter marketing season that will enable farmers to plan and go back to the land on time.
