The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board has set the 28th of this month as the date when tobacco auctioning will be closed, but said contract tobacco sales are continuing.

The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board Chairperson, Patrick Devenish told ZBC News this Tuesday that the auctioning of the golden leaf will be officially closed this Friday while a date for mop-up sales will be announced in due course.

“We have set the 28th of this month as the date when the auction of tobacco will come to an end; we hope all farmers will have delivered their crop. A mop-up date will be set in due course, but contract tobacco sales will remain open.”

Devenish expressed satisfaction over the performance of the tobacco industry, saying prospects of the sector are bright considering the tremendous increase in the volumes of seed sold for the next season.

“We might miss the target of 230 million kilograms this year but the quality delivered is impressive. We have witnessed a significant increase in seed sold for next season this is good news as the future of our tobacco industry looks brighter.”

About 176 million kilogrammes of tobacco have so far gone under the hammer, raking in over 439 million United States dollars.
