A ten member Table Tennis squad is set to represent Zimbabwe at the Chinese Ambassador’s Cup set for Zambia next month.
The National Top 16 Championships held in Harare recently gave the country’s table tennis custodians a perfect opportunity to pick its arsenal for the annual Chinese Ambassador’s Cup in neighbouring Zambia from the 25th to the 30th of next month.
The tournament will see five men and an equal number of women battling for honours in Lusaka before Harare hosts the same competition in July.
“We used the National Top 16 Table Tennis Championships to select a team which will represent the country at the Zambia event. Given that we had last played any meaningful competitive games before lockdown, our players are showing signs of rust but we believe the coaches will work with them and make sure they are back in the games before we travel. We have so much faith in the team and we are positive that they will play for pride and make us proud as usual. The games have also come at a good time as we eye the Chinese Ambassador’s Cup in this country maybe in August before we participate at the African Union Sports Council Region V games later this year,” said Noah Ferenando, Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union President.
The women’s team is made of Isheanesu Siringwani, Ashley Dhlamini, Pauline Dube, Vimbai Makuvaza and Tsitsi Thebe, while Vikram Singh, Brian Chamboko, Tinotenda Fambira, Aidan Mabhaudhi and Nick Jani will represent the country in the men’s category.
Singh was crowned champion at the National Top 16 Table Tennis Championships held at Winwood College in Ruwa recently.
