Swiss food processing giant to partner local firms

THE Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area, Mr Wamkele Mene says Swiss food processing giant, Buhler Group is interested in partnering local firms in the utilisation of agriculture technologies to ensure food security.

The need to deepen intra-Africa trade was topical when the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretary General paid a courtesy call on President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House in Harare this Wednesday.

Mr Mene was accompanied by executives of Buhler Group, which has interests in the agriculture and food processing value chains.

We came here to brief His Excellency, the President on the proposals being made for the industrialisation, food processing and agricultural products. We brought here the Buhler Group which is interested in partnering local companies to improve food security, the President was very emphatic about food security of the the country and the continent at large,” he said.

The move is a step in the right direction for AFCFTA as it seeks to ensure the continent feeds itself instead of relying on imports from other continents.

We are very much interested in this as a secretariat because we want to see more trade within the continent rather than relying on Ukraine, for example, for maize, wheat and cereals, we must be able to trade more on agricultural products in the continent. We hope the Buhler Group model for Zimbabwe will not only benefit this country but the continent as well,” he added.

Zimbabwe is attracting huge investments across all sectors of the economy and the interest by the Swiss giant cements the view that Zimbabwe is Open for Business.
