Zim set to host cricket World Cup qualifiers

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

ZIMBABWE will host another International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Harare and Bulawayo in June and July this year.

The qualifier, which will determine the final two participants for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup to be staged in India later in the year, is scheduled from the 18th of June until 9 July in Harare and Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe hosted the last qualifier in 2018, but they failed to progress to the World Cup after being shocked by the United Arab Emirates in the semi-finals.

The full list of the 10 teams that will feature in the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier is yet to be confirmed.

The top eight nations on the ICC Super league log including hosts, India qualify automatically for the World Cup, while the bottom five on the 13-team log will be playing in Zimbabwe for the two remaining slots.

They will be joined by the top three teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and the top two teams from the 2023 World Cup Qualifier playoff for associate nations that is set to be held in April.

Zimbabwe’s participation in the Qualifier 2023 is already confirmed as they are out of contention for direct qualification ahead of their final Super League series at home to the Netherlands this month.

The two sides will meet in three ODIs scheduled for the 21st, 23rd and the 25th of March at Harare Sports Club.

Zimbabwe is using the series against Netherlands as preparations for the qualifying tournament on home soil.
