Young Sables earn crucial victory

Story by Reynald Ngwarati

THE Zimbabwe Under 20 Rugby team bounced back to winning ways after a hard fought 38-37 victory over the United States of America in their last group match at the World Rugby Trophy in Kenya, this Tuesday.

Despite a slow start to the encounter, the Young Sables buried the demons from the past two matches as they cruised to a thrilling single-point victory over the United States of America in their last group A game.

After going down to Scotland and Uruguay, the Young Sables started on the back foot, but a spirited and determined effort from the boys, earned Shaun de Souza’s charges a remarkable comeback.

Having been drawn in the group of death, which featured three previous winners of the tournament, Scotland, Uruguay and the USA, the reigning African Champions stuck to their game plan in an adrenaline packed encounter at Nyayo Stadium.

“The plan worked and the boys did the job and we will take the victory against the USA. It’s a big one, they have big investments going to the USA team as they will be hosting the upcoming World Cups. Also their university system has invested so much in their rugby. We use very little resources, so for us to come and take down a huge nation like that it’s huge for the boys, it’s huge for the country,” said de Souza.

With their hopes of a top four finish dented, the Young Sables will now engage in playoff matches for fifth and sixth spot which will determine their final ranking.

“We had to shuffle things up a bit, we played seven of our U-19s as a platform to also get them to express themselves and get exposure at that level as we’re also plan going forward. It is not just about this event, yes we came into this event aiming for the top four and we lost the first two games and it goes to this stage where we’re fighting for fifth and sixth,” he added.

The Young Sables will have their eyes on doing better than their previous seventh spot ranking, as they seek to build for the future.
