Japanese Ambassador Judo Cup 7th edition held

Story by Raynald Ngwarati

THE Japanese Ambassador Judo Cup successfully marked its seventh installment this Saturday at the Hellenic School, with judokas harnessing the platform to showcase their skills.

In a sign of unwavering commitment to the growth of Judo in Zimbabwe, the Japanese Embassy this Saturday demonstrated their continued solidarity with the local Judo Association after creating yet another platform for local judokas to compete.

Marking a seventh installment of the partnership, judokas from as young as five years had an opportunity to battle it out at the annual tournament.

The Judo Association of Zimbabwe took advantage of the tournament to prepare its athletes for impending regional and international tournaments.

“We’re trying to use this competition in preparing our athletes for Region 5 Games that are going to take place in Windhoek, Namibia next year. We’re also preparing for the Africa games which will take place in Ghana next year as well as the youth Olympic Games to be held in Dakar in 2025,” said Judo Association of Zimbabwe president, Smart Deke.

Judokas hailed the platform for affording them a chance to improve their technique and physique before embarking on major tournaments.

“This is my first tournament so I think this will be a great experience to try and extend my level of Judo and just not fighting in class, but actually doing it for our country,” said Judoka, Wesley Broom.

“I think if I’m able to fight at the Japanese Ambassador Judo Cup I’m able to get a goal at the highest level,” said Judoka, Sasha Rodrick.

This year’s edition of the Japanese Ambassador Judo Cup marks the second year since the resumption of the Japanese Embassy-sponsored tournament after a lengthy COVID-19-induced break.

The partnership started in 2015 with the vision of growing the sport in Zimbabwe and breeding judokas able to challenge at the highest level.
