Egypt & Ghana on the brink of elimination

Egypt & Ghana on the brink of elimination

Story by Anashe Murombedzi, Sports Reporter

SEVEN-TIME African champions Egypt and perennial campaigners Ghana are facing an early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations after sharing the spoils in a two-all draw in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire last night.

In-form midfielder Mohammed Kudus scored a brace as he twice gave Ghana the lead only for Egypt to salvage a point as the match ended two-all.

Record African champions Egypt will be eager to have skipper Mohammed Salah back for the next match after he limped off with an injury.

It was, however, West Ham’s Kudus who stole the show with two well-executed goals.

Cape Verde top Group B with three points, followed by Egypt on two while Ghana and Mozambique have a point apiece.

Cape Verde have a chance to book their place in the next round if they beat Mozambique today with the match set to kick off at 4 pm.

In other matches played yesterday, Nigeria edged hosts Côte d’Ivoire ONE-NIL in an exciting Group A encounter.

Cote d’Ivoire slipped to third in the group with three points while Nigeria moved into second with four points from two matches.

Equatorial Guinea top the group with four points after a 4-2 victory over Guinea-Bissau in an earlier match.

The focus is on Group C this Friday where a clash of the titans between defending champions Senegal and Cameroon is on the cards at 7 pm while Guinea faces Gambia at 10 pm.
