Chevrons begin quest to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

THE Zimbabwe senior cricket team, the Chevrons get their 2024 International Cricket Council T20 World Cup qualifying campaign underway with date against hosts Namibia in Windhoek this Wednesday.

The last two slots for the 2024 T20 World Cup to be staged in the United States of America and the West Indies will be decided during the seven-team Africa Regional Qualifier, which gets underway this Wednesday in Namibia.

Zimbabwe is one of the seven countries competing with the aim of participating at back-to-back T20 World Cups.

Hosts, Namibia will fancy their chances in claiming one of the two slots in the single round-robin tournament, alongside the Chevrons who are favourites to win the tournament.

Day One of the tournament sees Kenya taking on Rwanda at the United Ground, with Tanzania meeting Uganda at Wanderers in the morning session this Wednesday.

The headline act of the day will be a clash of the favourites as Namibia takes on Zimbabwe at Wanderers in the afternoon session.

The teams traded blows in a bilateral series last month, with Namibia emerging 3-2 victors.

Zimbabwe welcomes a number of players who did not play in that series, most notably Blessing Muzarabani and Sean Williams who have been struggling for fitness.

Sikander Raza takes over the Captaincy from Craig Ervine, but the former skipper is still a vital cog of the team adding experience together with Ryan Burl and Tendai Chatara.

Zimbabwe and Namibia were automatic qualifiers for the Regional Final by virtue of their participation at the 2022 T20 World Cup.

All seven teams will play against each other and the top two teams at the end of the round-robin will play in the final set on the 2nd of December.
