BUZ targets junior participation

Story by Mthokozisi Dube

THE Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) is hoping to assemble competitive sides for junior basketball championships set for this year.

After JBC became the first Zimbabwean team to reach the round of 16 in the Basketball Africa League, BUZ is riding on that success story for junior development.

The focus has shifted to the national teams for the Under 16 and 18 competitions.

The Under 18s will feature in the Afrobasket qualifiers set for Zambia in May, while the Under 16s will participate at the African Union Sports Council Region V Afrobasket qualifiers in Namibia later this year.

“2024 is looking to be a busy season for us as the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe. We have got quite several events lined up, two international junior tournaments, the Afrobasket U16 and Afrobasket Qualifiers U18. We are quite excited about the junior tournaments and we want to send two national teams to those competitions. On top of that, we will have our flagship national championships in Gweru,” said BUZ president, Joe Mujuru.

Trials are already underway in Bulawayo.

“We had our trials at the weekend and we hope by having the four junior coaches from this end, we will have part of the players qualifying to represent the country in the upcoming junior competitions,” said BUZ Secretary General, Francis Dube.

World Basketball Governing Body, FIBA has introduced female teams for the Basketball Africa League and the involvement of junior teams is expected to aid the development of the sport.
