GOVERNMENT has unveiled digital economy initiatives in Mashonaland West Province as part of efforts to bridge the technological gap between urban and rural communities.

The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Honourable Jenfan Muswere was in Mashonaland West Province where he commissioned computer labs at Pindi Park Secondary School in Zvimba District, Huyo and Chitimbe Primary Schools as well as Nyamupfukudza High School in Hurungwe District.

Minister Muswere also commissioned Public Finance Management Kiosks at Makonde and Hurungwe Districts Government offices, much to the appreciation of the beneficiaries.

“The kiosks helped us a lot, for example when there was a surge in COVID- 19 cases it was easier to relay updates, records and all the statistics. We also used them for our virtual meetings and right now they are being used  in the mobile registration exercise by those without gadgets,” said a beneficiary.

The Smart Zimbabwe Master Plan also took centre stage.

“We are here to assess our National E-learning Strategy which includes, equipping, connecting, training of learners as well as teachers on digital skills in line with NDS 1 in particular smart education pillar where we expect everyone to have digital skills by the year 2030. Some of the other initiatives include smart agriculture, we are also working on smart health pillar which is going to give virtual treatment capability,” said the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Hon Jenfan Muswere.

Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Mary Mliswa implored beneficiaries to take good care of the equipment.

“I plead with you to handle these computers with care, we don’t want vandals, if you are not sure of anything learn to ask,” she noted.

In line with the National Development Strategy One, government seeks to facilitate achievement of an E- enabled economy where all sectors embrace ICT to improve efficiency in line with global trends.
