The Ministry of health and Child Care Acting Provincial Medical Director, Dr Andrew Muza told the ZBC News that the patients who are exhibiting mild symptoms of Covid-19 are isolating at the two learning facilities.
Of late we have noted an upsurge of cases in Umzingwane cases where we recorded about 233 cases from Sacred heart schools . The affected students and teachers are being monitored on a daily basis , and we don’t have severely affected patients at the moment . We have moved on to the site , we have done active case finding where we have tested everyone and those found positive are in isolation ,he said.
Health authorities have since put in place various measures to contain the spread of virus , with investigations to establish the cause of the outbreak in progress .
We have strengthened infection control measures at the school , we have provided sanitation facilities , we are doing contact tracing and conscentising the local communities . Investigations on the outbreak are still going on but we suspect there are students who came to the school already positive or members of staff who were moving in and out the school could have contracted the virus ,he added.
Umzingwane Legislator Brigadier General Retired Levi Mayihlome commended government for its swift response in dealing with the outbreak.
We thank the health authorities for moving in swiftly to contain the disease and we want to encourage communities around the schools and the entire district to be extra vigilant so that we do not record more cases ,said Cde Mayihlome.
Matabeleland South province has so far recorded 2500 cases of Covid-19 with Beitbridge, Mangwe and Gwanda districts accounting for the highest numbers.
