Police in Masvingo have arrested shebeen operators for defying covid-19 lockdown regulations by illegally selling alcohol.
Masvingo Province Police Spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa says they have arrested 10 people in Masvingo City who were operating drinking outlets at a time the country is under lockdown.
Inspector Dhewa added that they are going to conduct the same operations in other districts in the province.
“We have made arrests in the city as well as in Mucheke residential area following tip offs from members of the public.
“We urge them to continue assisting us as the duty to prevent the transmission of coronavirus is a collective responsibility,” said Inspector Dhewa.
Inspector Dhewa reminded residents that they are expected to religiously adhere to lockdown regulations particularly during this period when covid19 cases are on the increase.
“We want to warn those who do not want to put on their masks in a proper manner that our police officers are on the ground. We continue to warn those people who want to move unnecessarily especially during curfew that our police officers will be alert,” he said.
To date, Masvingo Province has 506 active cases and has recorded 31 deaths since the onset of the pandemic.
