GOVERNMENT has launched a new export crop spearheaded by the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe under the Presidential Free Inputs Scheme.
The production of the Sesame crop popularly known as “runinga” is set for a major boost after government tasked the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe-COTTCO to spearhead the growth of the export crop.
Cottco Acting Managing Director, Mr Pious Manamike told farmers during a tour by the company’s Board of Directors of cotton ginneries and selling points in Mashonaland West province that government is set to avail resources for the production of the sesame crop next season.
“I have good news for you, apart from giving you inputs for the cotton government has given us another task to supply all cotton farmers with free input for sesame export crop. This will go a long way toward boosting your income generation, and cover the risk in the event that cotton fails, so this year let prepare for this new export crop,” revealed Manamike.
Cottco Board Chair, Dr Abraham Babs Nyoni said there will be a paradigm shift in strategy, with the company adopting a massive value addition and beneficiation approach.
“The new strategy in the short term will be to increase production, farmers should prosper to produce high yields, if productivity is boosted it will be viable for the cotton company to take the value addition direction and generate jobs and generate more income to sustain itself than rely on presidential free inputs,” she noted.
The tour by the Cottco board revealed that farmers who have delivered their white gold are yet to be paid owing to various challenges including access to cash and mobile transfer limits.
