THE select healthcare tennis master’s tournament kicked off at Harare sports club this Thursday, with Martin Dzuwa, Miracle Matanga and Tinaye Badza among players to progress to the quarter-finals.
The Open tournament kicked off with players vying for places in the last 8. Experience prevailed when Martin Dzuwa got the better of Thomson Tomu 6-3, 6-2, while Andrew Kunaka eased into the quarter finals following a 6-2, 6-0 win over Marco Milasajvic. Kennedy Munyani was flawless in his 6-0, 6-0 win over Takudzwa Makoni as Terrence Mazungaire progressed beyond the last 16 after a 6-0, 6-0 win over Walter Handitye.
Miracle Matanga overcame Taurai Mhlanga 6-2, 6-2 with Tinaye Badza progressing to the quarter finals after a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Stephen Chiwanza.
Event Co-Ordinator, Freeman Nyamunokora said while there was a reduction in numbers, the tournament is important in giving exposure to young players.
“This is an important tournament because there are no ranking considerations. Anyone can enter so it also gives young players a chance to rub shoulders with older players and in the process it gives them confidence and helps mould them into top players,” he said.
The quarter-finals of the select healthcare master’s tournament will be held this Friday.
The open tennis extravaganza which began on Thursday will come to an end on Sunday.
