Government says it is illegal to peg school fees exclusively in United States dollars as parents have the option to pay at the prevailing interbank rate.
This came out during Thursday’s Senate session, as local currency stability, power supply, welfare of civil servants and war veterans were some of the issues that took centre stage.
Finance and Economic Development Deputy Minister, Honourable Clement Chiduwa gave a detailed response on the current economic situation.
“We have witnessed a volatile exchange rate the past month, but if you’ve noticed, since we implemented measures to curtail speculators from sabotaging the local currency, there has been a huge drop on the parallel market, and now there is huge demand for the local currency,” he said.
Honorable Chiduwa added that schools that are demanding fees payment exclusively in United States dollars will face the full wrath of the law.
He said, “We agreed that schools could charge fees in USD and local currency and parents can also pay the equivalent of the USD to the prevailing interbank rate and it’s shocking to hear that some schools are demanding payment in USD only and we hereby warn them that it’s illegal and if investigated and found wanting, they will be arrested.”
Leader of Government business in the Upper House, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa who is also the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring that veterans of the liberation struggle are taken care of.
“We have a ministry that looks into the affairs of our war veterans and their families. Yes, we note that there are some who did not benefit from the compensation as some had already passed on when it was done, but if their families can come forward with their death certificates and witnesses that can attest they participated in the liberation struggle and their area, that should not be a problem they will can assistance, school fees payment and all the other benefits their counterpart have received,” she explained.
Government recently ascended the veterans of the Liberation Bill into law to provide rights and benefits for them and their dependents.
