THE 41st Ordinary Summit of SADC heads of state and government is underway in Lilongwe, with the incoming SADC Chairperson and Malawian President, Dr Lazarus Chakwera calling on the region to re-double efforts in recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr Chakwera also congratulated the people of Zambia for the recent peaceful elections won by Mr Hakainde Hichilema.
Dr Chakwera said COVID-19 has reversed economic progress in most countries, with efforts towards regional integration having been affected.
He said despite the setback, the region can however make quick gains by fostering an environment for the creation of jobs for young people, revitalising trade across borders, enhance industrial production and also accelerating recovery of key sectors such as tourism.
Dr Chakwera takes over as SADC Chairperson from President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique.
