ZIMBABWE international midfielder Tafadzwa Rusike’s ZESCO United have closed in on log leaders NAPSA Stars as the battle for championship in the Zambian Super League intensifies.
A lot of drama continues to unfold in the Zambian Super League with only one round of matches left before the season comes to an abrupt end following a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in the neighbouring country.
However, Rusike could see himself smiling again come Thursday as his club Zesco United are on the verge of lifting the crown if they win against Red Arrows and log leaders NAPSA Stars and second-placed Nkana slip.
Rusike’s Zesco beat Ocean Mushure’s Lusaka Dynamos 1- 0 to move to third position on 46 points, two adrift log leaders with a game to go.
Warriors international Evans Katema saw his side Zanaco moving to within three points of log leaders NAPSA Stars after an impressive 3-0 win away to Nakambala Leopards on Sunday.
Mathematically, Zanaco also has an equal chance of claiming the bragging rights if all the four teams above them find the going tough on Thursday.
Struggling Buildcon who are home to Takudzwa Chimwemwe, Donald Teguru and 2019 Castle Lager Soccer Star-of-the-Year Joel Ngodzo survived the dreaded chop despite a 1-nil loss to NAPSA Stars at the weekend.
Elsewhere, Warriors captain Knowledge Musona imprinted his name on the scoreboard when his side KAS Eupen drew 2-all with Sint Truiden in Belgium on Friday.
Musona who opened the scoring in the first half has so far found the net twice in seven appearances for the club.
Tinotenda Kadewere’s Lyon was on the receiving end, losing 6-5 on penalties to PSG in the French League Cup final, although the Warriors forward did not feature in the match.
