Reliable funding crucial for Gwayi- Shangani project

The government is convinced the end of year deadline for the completion of the Gwayi-Shangani Dam project will be met with a reliable source of funding from the Treasury.
Mhlomuli Ncube reports
The country’s third largest inland dam is expected to be completed by the end of the year with the Government cognisant of the need for a reliable source of funding to ensure the set targets are met.
“We want this project to be completed and we have heard that consistent funding from treasury should be a priority. We will bring the minister of finance to appreciate the urgency of finding this project.”
The contractors are equally confident of meeting the end of year target with 41 percent of construction work covered so far.
“We believe that by December 2021 we will deliver this project if the funds are released timeously.”
The Gwayi-Shangani dam will not only serve Matabeleland North but is expected to solve the city of Bulawayo’s water challenges and create a massive agricultural greenbelt.
