Public transport situation improves

Government’s decision to engage franchise holders and open up the public transport sector to private players to complement the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) is gradually paying off with some buses which had been withdrawn back on the road.

The commuting public has also welcomed the increased number of buses plying intra-city routes.

Commuters who spoke to the ZBC news at Copa Cabana bus terminus summed up the relief among public transport users.

“There has been an improvement from last week’s chaos and the buses are now visible, but more are still needed,” said a commuter.

Another said, “We thank the government for the intervention as the situation was terrible last week but now we are going home and to work on time.”

“The situation has greatly improved from last week’s chaos, but ZUPCO also has to be time conscious as sometimes they slack,” noted another.

Last week, intra-city routes, including Budiriro, Glen View, Mufakose, Mabvuku-Tafara and Kuwadzana were the most affected after a fall-out between franchise operators and ZUPCO was heightened by payment delays.
