Public health experts have commended government for the new Covid-19 containment measures announced this Saturday saying if adhered to they will curtail a possible third wave of the pandemic.
Zimbabwe’s COVID-19 cases have been surging in the past week with 596 new cases and 26 deaths recorded in the last seven days.
From the 5th to the 11th of June 2021, an average of 78 cases were reported per day compared to an average of 36 cases per day in the previous week,a figure Itai Rusike-Executive Director- Community working group believes is too high hence the new Covid-19 containment measures should be strictly adhered to.
We commend the government of Zimbabwe for being proactive in taking the necessary covid-19 preventive measures in order to prevent a looming disaster from the 3rd wave. Yes some people may view the measures as draconian but they are necessary and important in saving lives hence we want to encourage the general public to embrace these measures. We also want to urge the general public to continue religiously observing the who recommended guidelines. This is a welcome move from the government as people had relaxed and this has resulted in a surge in numbers hence these new measures are welcome, he said.
Some of the new measure to be effected from Monday the 14th include the banning of all gatherings which include weddings, church, music festivals and sporting activities.
Funerals are now limited to thirty people.
Over 1600 people have succumbed to covid-19 in Zimbabwe since the first case was detected in the country last year.
