THE first-ever Child-friendly Online Safety Guidelines in the country meant to ensure the safety of children on various digital platforms have been launched.
Childline in partnership with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) launched the guidelines in Harare this Friday.
The Child Online Safety Guidelines which are in Shona, Ndebele and English, were crafted after consultations with all the relevant stakeholders.
“We consulted children and stakeholders like POTRAZ who assisted in the development of the guidelines. The guidelines are child friendly since they have pictures. They are also inclusive since they are also found in digital form. We have audios to cater for the visually impaired and visuals to cater for those with hearing impairments,” he said.
The Guidelines were developed in the wake of an increase in cyber bullying and other dangers associated with social media platforms.
“Children access dangerous social media sites like Tinder which can expose them to pornography and online sexual grooming among other vices. The guidelines are meant to guard against that,” he said
The initiative was also welcomed by Parents who attended the launch.
According to Childline, children’s exposure to the internet has increased during the Covid-19 induced lockdown and the guidelines will assist caregivers with measures to protect children.
