Plans to construct female prisons in the pipeline: Comm. Gen. Chihobvu

THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) is working on constructing suitable female remand prisons in all provinces as the country currently has only two such facilities.
Only female inmates at Shurugwi and Londolozi prisons are using jails designed for females.
However, the ZPCS Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu during his visit in Mutare this Friday told ZBC News that there are plans to construct suitable remand prisons for female offenders and indicated that serving female inmates will be transferred to the Women’s open prison which is currently under construction in Marondera once it is completed.
“It is not only in Mutare but I would say all our prisons except Shurugwi and Londolozi those are designed for female prisoners. The other prisons are designed for male prisoners and we accommodate female prisoners on temporal basis. We are currently in the process of constructing a female prison that will accommodate all convicted female offenders and construction is at an advanced stage. So for the remands we have to make sure that we have prisons that accommodate females,” said the Commissioner General.
The ZPCS Commissioner General and his deputies are on a nationwide tour of prisons to assess the various income generating projects that are being undertaken to ensure there is sustainability in all prisons nationwide.
