Pecan nut project set to boost prospects for Mat North and South

By ZBC Reporter

GOVERNMENT is working on a pecan nuts farming project that is set to benefit farmers in Matabeleland North and South Provinces.

The project will see farmers working with the Agriculture and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) and a private partner.

This was revealed by the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement, Dr Anxious Masuka during his tour of Balu Pecan and Livestock project at Umguza Arda farm in Matabeleland North.

Doing agro-ecological zones, if we selected 10 species and said this is what we are going to have, for the country and we definitely have export markets we then say as you have suggested Mat South and North Provinces are good for pecan nuts, he said.

The initiative is expected to go beyond just harvesting and exporting, as a processing plant will be set up in Zimbabwe.

Pecan nuts are a lucrative export crop and can be grown easily, dovetailing with the Government’s vision of uplifting rural communities to achieve an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.
