Over five million counted in ongoing census

THE ongoing Population and Housing Census has received overwhelming response, with over five million people having been counted since Thursday last week.
Despite facing a number of challenges in executing its duties, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency, (ZIMSTAT) has already counted over five million people since the onset of the programme last week.
Giving an update to the media in Harare this Monday, ZIMSTAT Director General, Mr Taguma Mahonde warned those who are not being receptive to enumerators saying it is a criminal offence to hinder them from discharging their duties.
“It is a criminal offence to attack any ZimStat enumerator going about their duties and also to provide false information knowingly. Our enumerators do not call people but they do call backs with the consent of those being questioned. The nature of our questionnaires requires face to face hence we do not do it over the phone,”he elaborated.
Director Production Statistics Coordinator for Data Quality Management, Mrs Matiwonesa Phiri gave an insight into the data collection process.
“We have a data centre that is verifying all the information that is being brought here, where there is inconsistency we send it back for meticulous data collection and in some cases some people are counted twice and that we correct and record the actual data,” she said.
The door knocking and questioning continues until the 30th of this month when the 2022 Population and Housing Census comes to an end.
