President Emmerson Mnangagwa has pardoned over three thousand prisoners who have been released today.
Speaking to ZBC News, Commissioner General Of Zimbabwe Prisons And Correctional Services, Moses Chihobvu said the amnesty was been granted through an amnesty order, 1 of 2021, under the Constitution of Zimbabwe and on health grounds in relation to COVID-19 regulations.
Commissioner General Chihobvu said juveniles, females who have served a third of their sentences and those in open prisons have benefited from the clemency.
He however said those convicted of offences like murder, treason, carjacking, robbery, those who have escaped from lawful custody and those with pending cases, among other serious crimes would not be pardoned.
