OPPOSITION political parties have hailed the 42nd Heroes Day commemorations, saying Zimbabweans must consolidate unity of purpose for the development of the country.
There was a bumper crowd at the National Heroes Acre for the Heroes Day commemorations, with opposition parties also part of the proceedings.
National Constitutional Assembly President, Professor Lovemore Madhuku said recognition of all those who fought in the liberation struggle is profound and encouraging.
“Zimbabwe must consolidate the unity of purpose by commemorating this day. What is also encouraging is that all those who fought during the liberation struggle are being recognised,” he said.
MDC-T President, Senator Douglas Mwonzora and Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume agreed on the importance of paying homage to the decorated sons and daughters of the liberation struggle.
“We are happy to join the rest of the nation in commemorating this day. We are also happy that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has recognized the late Ndabaningi Sithole and James Chikerama, who played an important role in the independence of this country.
“We revere the sacrifices that have been made by those who departed and the living Heroes of this nation, hence taking pride in coming to this shrine to pay our respects,” they said respectively.
Those who were at the national shrine had an opportunity to lay wreaths on the graves of their loved ones while others cherished the opportunity of having a closer view of the shrine.
