WOMEN in Matabeleland North’s Nkayi District are taking a keen interest in promoting traditional dishes during the culture month after showcasing the best that the area has to offer at the weekend.
It was traditional dish showcase in Nkayi this Sunday as women took up the call to showcase different traditional dishes during the cultural month.
The initiative involved cooking and displaying different dishes as a way of promoting Zimbabwe’s indigenous delicacies.
“I understand the importance of traditional foods in our communities, they are of important dietary value. Traditional foods must be encouraged, consumed and promoted even to our children,” said a community member.
Legislators also turned up with a seal of approval.
“We can never go wrong with indigenous foods, they are our life,” said Nkayi South Legislator Hon Stars Mathe.
Honourable Elizabeth Masuku (Matabeleland North (Bubi Umguza) Proportional Representation Legislator said, “We now have all these different diseases because of the eating of Western foods, let us continue preaching that local food is the best.”
“We never used to have many ailments but the uptake of Western foods is the reason why many of us now suffer many sicknesses. Let us continue promoting local foods,” said Hon Sikhanyisiwe Mpofu Nkayi Senator.
The First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa has also been on a national crusade to promote the uptake of indigenous foods.
