CONFUSION is reigning supreme in the MDC- T after the leader of the opposition party, Douglas Mwonzora accused Thokozani Khupe of violating the party’s constitution.

This comes after Khupe announced that she was breaking away from the MDC-T forming a new splinter group.

Mwonzora, who addressed the media in Harare this Friday, said the party’s executive has rejected Khupe’s move before announcing that she is no longer a member of MDC-T.

“The National Executive completely rejected the declaration of a split, there is no split in the MDC T . This is because when Thokozanai Khupe held her Press conference she was accompanied by only two MPs and also after her declaration none of the MPs in Parliament expressed solidarity with her.We are also happy to note that a hundred percent of our provinces rejected the call for a split. The declaration of split is not provided for anywhere in the Constitution of MDC, it is also not provided for in the Constitution of Zimbabwe or anywhere in the law,” said Mwonzora.

According to Mwonzora, Khupe can no longer use the party name and symbol.

“Dr Khupe is no-longer a member of our party by virtue of her declaration, we do not know what her party will be called but definitely not MDC T, as MDC T is a party of the people who follow the law and who have gone to the extraordinary congress. Therefore, Dr Khupe will not be allowed to use our name, our symbol and our party insignia,” he said.

Responding to questions on whether the MDC-T will seek dialogue with Khupe, Mwonzora said it is practically impossible as she does not belong to any political party.

“We dialogue with political parties, so we can’t have dialogue with her, her actions were based on advice from half cooked lawyers,” added Mwonzora.

When Khupe announced the formation of a new MDC-t splinter group, she also accused Mwonzora of violating the party’s constitution.
