A 41-YEAR OLD Mutare man has been arraigned before the courts on allegations of raping his four-year old daughter on numerous occasions since 2016. The man appeared in court in Mutare this Friday.
He was remanded in custody to the 7th of December and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
It is the State’s case that between 2016 and this year in October, the accused raped his now four-year-old daughter multiple times in the absence of the girl’s mother who was at school.
It is further alleged that at one point the girl’s mother noticed some bruises on her daughter’s thighs but did not suspect it could be sexual abuse.
The state also alleges that in October this year, the girl’s grandmother, who had taken the girl to her home, noticed that the girl had been sexually abused and notified the girl’s mother.
Upon being quizzed, the minor narrated her ordeal to her mother and grandmother, who then filed a police report leading to the accused person’s arrest.
Cases of rape and sexual abuse have been on the rise, particularly the rape of minors below the age of 12 years.
According to the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23, sex with a minor below the age of 16 is considered as rape.
Last year, the police revealed that about 325 girls are raped every month, the majority between the ages of 11 and 15, which translates to 11 rape cases daily.
