The number of murder cases involving close family members has become a major source of worry with the Zimbabwe Republic Police attributing some of the cases to drug abuse.

The past few days have been tragic in the wake of an increase in the number of murder cases involving close family members across the country.

According to police records, on the 24th of this month William Kuwanda fatally assaulted his father Kuwanda Mberi in Bikita.

In another case on the 25th of this month, Jestina Sakhalin was fatally assaulted by her brother-in-law Takudzwa Msimanga in Sanyati.

A Chiredzi man also killed his mother and dumped the body in a bush.

In another case, Shame Zorwa fatally assaulted his brother in law, Philimon Mudzinge in Bhume resettlement area.

“Close family members are being involved in disputes. They then kill each other. They are using lethal weapons. We are really concerned, we want to urge communities to solve issues amicably,” ZRP National Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi attributed some of the cases to drug abuse.

Police have since called on community and traditional leaders to pursue dialogue and find amicable ways of resolving disputes.
