THE daughter to the late former Mozambican President Samora Machel, Ms Olivia Machel, has paid a courtesy call on President Emmerson Mnangagwa this Thursday, with discussions focusing on economic issues.
Emerging from the closed door meeting with the President, Ms Machel, who was speaking through an interpreter said her visit sought to brief President Mnangagwa on the Chongoene Port project.
She said the project was her late father’s dream, noting that the region is in need of an efficient transport system due to the vast minerals which require transportation.
The Chongoene Port Project which has an estimated investment of US$3 billion, also involves a railway connection to the Limpopo corridor.
Ms Machel was accompanied by Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, who said the plans to set up the port come at a time when Zimbabwe is developing a steel plant project in Manhize, Chivhu.
“While they were looking at this project, Zimbabwe started developing a steel project which is in Manhize. Clearly, from the onset we will be exporting steel from Zimbabwe. We will be producing steel at low cost price. Last week Chinshang was in Maputo negotiating with Olivia and her team,” he said.
According to Ambassador Mutsvangwa, the Chongoene Port Project will be part of the discussions at a meeting between President Mnangagwa and Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi pencilled for this Friday.
