Minister Matiza visits accident victims in Mutare

THE MINISTER of Transport and Infrastructure development, Joel Biggie Matiza has visited 12 remaining patients at Mutare Provincial Hospital who are victims of the Harare-Mutare highway accident on Saturday.
Minister Matiza said there is a need to tighten the laws and rules of the road and ensure they are effectively implemented in order to reduce road carnage. He also commended Mutare Provincial Hospital for coming to the rescue of the accident victims.
This follows an accident that claimed 16 lives including the bus driver and conductor at the 218km peg along Harare-Mutare road. The accident occurred when a General Bande Bus side-swiped with a haulage truck that was carrying timber near Shamu.
Mutare Provincial Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Masanga Mutede says the patient who was in Intensive Care Unit has been removed from the unit as he is recovering adding that 12 patients who sustained major injuries are still admitted.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) National Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the bus driver was speeding and the accident occurred when he tried to overtake resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming truck.
