Mberengwa farmers appeal for agric equipment

FARMERS at Chimwe Chegato Irrigation Scheme in Mberengwa are appealing for government assistance in installing farming equipment that will enhance productivity at the scheme.
The scheme is the source of livelihood for 123 farmers.
In previous years, the scheme was subjected to power and water disconnections as ZESA Holdings and the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) sought to recover a combined debt of nine hundred thousand dollars(ZWL900 000).
“We could not afford to let this scheme become a white elephant. Families in this area are surviving from this scheme”, said Councillor Nokuthula Ndlela.
The irrigation has not only provided food security to villagers but it has created an economy dependant on farming.
“As villagers, we are happy to have this scheme back. As you can see in some parts, rains have not yet started but we are not too worried because we are already producing something to feed our families,” said a villager.
The government has embarked on a fact-finding mission at irrigation schemes across the country where reports suggest that a lot of irrigation equipment is underutilised or lying idle.
