A group of selected female inmates has been given a good Christmas cheer after getting an opportunity to be with their families during the festive season.

It is indeed a Merry Christmas for 11 inmates from the Marondera Female Open Prison, who were granted special leave to be with their families until the 28th of this month.

“I am happy that I will be with my family during the holidays,” an inmate, Moreblessing Nyamutata said.

Another inmate, Runaida Manyan’anya was also happy to be joining her family: “It is a happy moment to be with my family for the first time in 3 years.”

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) says the development is part of the new prisoners’ rehabilitation thrust.

“This programme has helped in rehabilitating our inmates,” Jubilee Madenga, the Officer in Charge at Marondera Female Open Prison said.

ZPCS Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Meya Kanyezi noted that they are pleased that inmates will be joined by their families during the holidays.

The Marondera female open prison which was officially opened in June this year has 21 inmates with the second batch of 10 going on leave on the 29th of this month to the 4th of January.
