Marondera-based celebrities who include veteran Sungura musician Josephat Somanje have joined the fight against drug and substance abuse, which has reached crisis level especially among the youth.

The drug and substance abuse scourge is not leaving any sphere of life unaffected, hence the coming on board of several opinion leaders in the fight against the vice.

Somanje literally came out of hibernation to join the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and other like-minded prominent personalities and the corporate sector on an awareness campaign against drug abuse.

“As a musician I cannot remain quite when drug abuse has wreaked havoc, tearing families apart,” Somanje said.

Wrestler Jonathan Muvingi said, “As a wrester and sportsman, I don’t use any drugs, but just the power I have through training which shows that drugs do not help, but destroy our lives.”

“Youths are the biggest victims, so we cannot keep quiet. So, we have decided to join the fight,” noted champion Youths Against Drug Abuse, Mr Sikumbuzo Bangure.

Marondera resident, Melody Cheuka said, “We have seen the negative effects of drug abuse in our communities where we live and it is time we fight this scourge.”

The government has come up with the Zimbabwe National Drugs Master Plan 2020-2025 which offers an integrated and comprehensive approach to addressing the vice.
