Government has availed ZWL$8 million for the rehabilitation of Manama hospital after the entire female ward was blown off by heavy winds this month.

The winds left a trail of destruction at Manama District Hospital and affected health service delivery in the southern parts of the country.

However, government has reacted swiftly after availing funds for the refurbishment of the 82-year old institution.

“I can confirm that we have received 8 million for the rehabilitation of the Manama hospital and as a province we are so grateful and straight away we have kick-started works,” Matabeleland South Provincial Development Coordinator, Latiso Dlamini said.

The tendering process is already underway with the Department of Public Works saying the work will be done by mid next month.

Sijabuliso Ncube, the Matabeleland South Province Public Works Director said: “We already started the tendering process and by mid-November, we should be done with the rehabilitation, although we had wished that we upgrade the hospital infrastructure to meet the modern standards.”

The health institution serves as the referral hospital for eight rural health centres in Gwanda South, Beitbridge and part of Matobo district.
