THE Malawi Electoral Commission has warned the media against publishing fake results, as the nation waits for the outcome of the Presidential Election Re-run held on Tuesday.
Chairman of the Malawi Electoral Commission Mr Chifundo Kachale told journalists at a media briefing in Blantyre that the electoral body is the only official organisation with a legal mandate to issue election results.
Mr Kachale accused certain unnamed individuals of propagating cooked up results, that have been filtering through social media.
He also appealed for calm as vote counting continues.
The Malawi Electoral Commission has until the 3rd of next month to unveil the results, although the announcement is widely expected to come this week.
Mr Kachale said the commission will only announce results after dealing with all the complaints.
Meanwhile, the Malawi Human Rights Commission, MHRC, which was behind mass protests against the Mutharika government since the May 2019 polls has also said it was impressed with the conduct of the rerun.
Voters in Malawi went to the polls on Tuesday for the second time in just over a year after the constitutional court ruled that last year’s polls were fraught with irregularities.
