Makeshift bridge used by smugglers destroyed

LAW enforcement agents have destroyed an illegal makeshift bridge which was being used by smugglers and illegal border jumpers near Beitbridge Border Post.

The operation was led by the Zimbabwe Republic Police with Beitbridge Commanding Officer, Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo warning illegal border jumpers and smugglers that their days are numbered.

“We are dealing with cunning and daring criminals who work in the dead of the night to construct such bridges. We have destroyed the structure and so far, we have confiscated 11 pressure boats that are used to illegally cross the border,” he said.

Assistant Regional Immigration Officer Trustworthy Manatsire welcomed the move saying it will improve compliance with immigration laws.

“We are losing revenue as a result of such mischief by those who set up their crossing point through which they smuggle humans and dutiable goods. We encourage those who want to cross in and out of the country to use designated points,” he said.

The government has also decentralised passport issuance services as part of efforts to improve access to travel documents and compliance with immigration laws.
